Housing Kitsap exits HUD subsidy programs on two apartment complexes

Michael Mirra, executive director of the Tacoma Housing Authority, said a benefit of Section 8 vouchers is the opportunity for tenants to choose where their lives. However, it can be difficult to find a new place, he said, especially in a tight housing market. 

Mirra says the switch to vouchers could be a smart move. “You're not disadvantaging any of the current tenants and you're giving them the option to move into the rental market,” he said, emphasizing that each housing authority makes decisions based on its own local market factors. 

 

The Tacoma Housing Authority has switched from a project-based subsidy linked to a property over the Section 8 vouchers — like Housing Kitsap — and vice versa, Mirra said.
