Opportunity

It’s time to breathe new life into Gault Middle School! What is your vision for this community asset? The Tacoma Housing Authority is looking into improving the Gault campus on Tacoma’s Eastside in partnership with Tacoma Public Schools. Over the coming months, Tacoma Housing Authority will assess whether or not it will acquire the site from the school district to make improvements. Situated in the heart of the McKinley neighborhood, the Gault site (and its future use) has been the subject of community conversation since it closed 2009. In designing and managing the site, we seek the views, concerns, advice, and support of community members.

  • The Gault Middle School and adjacent playfields are a total of 7.3 acres in size.
  • The historic school structure (~110,000 sq ft) is a community asset; we will explore options to preserve and renew it.
  • Extensive work to repair the roof of the main building is urgently needed. We plan to fix this in the near-term.
  • The non-historic buildings cannot be repaired. We will demolish them to make way for future improvements guided by community priorities.

This community planning will take place over many months. Opportunities for involvement include participation in a web survey, interviews, project listening sessions with interested groups, and a formal Community Advisory Group. Get involved!

The Future

Originally built in 1925, Gault Middle School has long been considered a “jewel” of the neighborhood with its historic architecture, beautiful interiors, and stunning views of Mt. Rainier from the playfields.

Consistent with its mission to provide high quality, stable and sustainable housing, Tacoma Housing Authority envisions bringing some housing to the Gault site.

From initial conversations with stakeholders, some possible additonal community uses for this campus have emerged, including:
  • Performing and culinary arts
  • Community day care
  • Early childhood development programs
  • Social enterprise space
  • Outdoor play and recreational spaces
These are only some initial ideas. We are conducting the community visioning for this site over the next many months to identify shared community vision and values and develop a clearer picture of how the community would like to be able to use the campus in the future.

Engagement Goals

Throughought the visioning and master plan process, an engagement team led by BDS Planning and Safe Streets, will coordinate the community process by working with:

  • Nearby residents, businesses, and community groups
  • Non-profit partners (especially those interested in locating offices or services at Gault)
  • Local faith leaders
  • Puyallup Tribal stakeholders
  • Public officials
Tacoma Housing Authority and Tacoma Public Schools will summarize lessons learned through our community engagement to identify potential partners and longterm commitment to the aspirations of the plan. We will also use these lessons to inform a series of Community Advisory Board meetings that will meet between May and November 2020.

Ongoing community consultation and neighborhood briefings are being conducted to share project progress and obtain broad community input.
